It is an important <a title="rail" href="http://www.uk-railway-sleepers.co.uk/">rail</a> <a title="hub" href="http://www.uk-hub.co.uk/">hub</a>; the main through-road now avoids the town itself.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><a href="http://www.uk-business-printing.co.uk/printer/dartford/" class="st_tag internal_tag" rel="tag" title="Posts tagged with Dartford">Dartford</a> lies within the area known as the <a href="http://www.uk-business-printing.co.uk/printer/london/" class="st_tag internal_tag" rel="tag" title="Posts tagged with London">London</a> Basin. The low-lying marsh to the north of the town consists of <a href="http://www.uk-business-printing.co.uk/printer/london/" class="st_tag internal_tag" rel="tag" title="Posts tagged with London">London</a> Clay, and the alluvium brought down by the two rivers &#8211; the Darent and the Cray &#8211; whose confluence is in this area. The higher land on which the town stands, and through which the narrow Darent valley runs, consists of chalk surmounted by the Blackheath Beds of sand and gravel.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">As a human settlement, <a href="http://www.uk-business-printing.co.uk/printer/dartford/" class="st_tag internal_tag" rel="tag" title="Posts tagged with Dartford">Dartford</a> became established as a river crossing-point with the coming of the Romans; and as a focal point between two routes &#8211; that from west to east being <a title="part" href="http://www.uk-part-time-jobs.co.uk/">part</a> of the main route connecting <a href="http://www.uk-business-printing.co.uk/printer/london/" class="st_tag internal_tag" rel="tag" title="Posts tagged with London">London</a> with the Continent; and the southerly route following the Darent valley. As a result the town&#8217;s main road pattern makes the shape of letter &#8216;T&#8217;. The <a href="http://www.uk-business-printing.co.uk/printer/dartford/" class="st_tag internal_tag" rel="tag" title="Posts tagged with Dartford">Dartford</a> Marshes to the north, and the proximity of Crayford in the <a href="http://www.uk-business-printing.co.uk/printer/london/" class="st_tag internal_tag" rel="tag" title="Posts tagged with London">London</a> Borough of Bexley to the west, mean that the town&#8217;s growth is to the south and east. Wilmington is to all intents and purposes part of the town to the south; whilst the almost continuous Thames Gateway development means that there is little to show the town boundary in an easterly direction.</p>

<p style="text-align: left;">The name Wycombe comes from the river Wye, and the old English word for a wooded valley, combe. Wycombe appears in the Domesday Book and was noted for having six mills. <p>It was the forerunner of the present-day <a href="http://www.uk-business-printing.co.uk/printer/blackpool/" class="st_tag internal_tag" rel="tag" title="Posts tagged with Blackpool">Blackpool</a> Illuminations.   In 1885 one of the world&#8217;s first electric tramways was laid down as a conduit line running from Cocker Street to Dean Street on the Promenade.   The line was operated by the <a href="http://www.uk-business-printing.co.uk/printer/blackpool/" class="st_tag internal_tag" rel="tag" title="Posts tagged with Blackpool">Blackpool</a> Electric Tramway Company until 1892 when their lease expired and <a href="http://www.uk-business-printing.co.uk/printer/blackpool/" class="st_tag internal_tag" rel="tag" title="Posts tagged with Blackpool">Blackpool</a> Corporation took over running the line.   A further line was added in 1895 from <a title="Manchester" href="http://www.uk-business-printing.co.uk/manchester/greater-manchester/">Manchester</a> Square along Lytham Road to South Shore, and the line was extended north, first to Gynn Square in 1899, and then to Fleetwood.   The tramway has remained in continuous <a title="service" href="http://www.uk-business-computer-services.co.uk/">service</a> to this day.</p>
<p>By the 1890s, the town had a population of 35,000, and could accommodate 250,000 holidaymakers.   The number of annual visitors, many staying for a week, was estimated at three million. 1894 saw the opening of two of the town&#8217;s most prominent buildings; the Grand Theatre on Church Street, and <a href="http://www.uk-business-printing.co.uk/printer/blackpool/" class="st_tag internal_tag" rel="tag" title="Posts tagged with Blackpool">Blackpool</a> Tower on the Promenade.</p>
<p>The first decade of the new century saw the development of the Promenade as we know it today, and further development southwards beyond South Shore towards <a title="Harrow" href="http://www.uk-business-printing.co.uk/harrow/greater-london/">Harrow</a>side and Squires Gate.   The Pleasure Beach was first established about this <a title="time" href="http://www.uk-part-time-jobs.co.uk/">time</a>. Seasonal static illuminations were first set up in 1912, although due to World War I and its aftermath, they only enjoyed two seasons until they were re-introduced in 1925.   The illuminations extended the holiday season into September and early October.</p>

<p style="text-align: left;"><a href="http://www.uk-business-printing.co.uk/printer/gosport/" class="st_tag internal_tag" rel="tag" title="Posts tagged with Gosport">Gosport</a> is a town and district in Hampshire with around 79,000 resident inhabitants, with a further 5-10,000 during the <a title="summer" href="http://www.uk-log-cabins.com/">summer</a> months, situated on the south coast of England. Part of the South Hampshire conurbation, <a title="it" href="http://www.uk-it-services.co.uk/">it</a> lies on a peninsula on the western side of Portsmouth Harbour opposite the city of Portsmouth, to which it is linked by a pedestrian ferry.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Until the last quarter of the 20th century it was a major naval and military <a title="centre" href="http://www.uk-call-centres.co.uk/">centre</a> associated with the defence and <a title="supply" href="http://www.uk-gas-suppliers.co.uk/">supply</a> infrastructure of Portsmouth Harbour. With the decline of these activities, many of its fortifications and installations, such as Fort Blockhouse and Palmerston Forts like Fort Brockhurst, have been opened to the public as tourism and heritage sites, with extensive redevelopment of the harbour area as a marina. Stokes Bay and the Solent are popular areas for yachting. Other tourism sites in <a href="http://www.uk-business-printing.co.uk/printer/gosport/" class="st_tag internal_tag" rel="tag" title="Posts tagged with Gosport">Gosport</a> include the Royal Navy Submarine Museum based just outside of Fort Blockhouse, the Explosion! exhibition, the <a href="http://www.uk-business-printing.co.uk/printer/gosport/" class="st_tag internal_tag" rel="tag" title="Posts tagged with Gosport">Gosport</a> museum and Little Woodham.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">The Rowner area of the peninsula was known to have been settled in Saxon times, mentioned in the Anglo Saxon Chronicles as Rughenor (Rough bank or slope). Both Rowner and Alverstoke (a village now within the boundaries of <a href="http://www.uk-business-printing.co.uk/printer/gosport/" class="st_tag internal_tag" rel="tag" title="Posts tagged with Gosport">Gosport</a>), the name coming from the original point where the River Alver entered the Solent at Stokes Bay, were included in the Domesday Book. Settlements in the wider region date back much earlier. Rowner is recorded as being the earliest settlement of the peninsula with many Mesolithic finds and a hunting camp (presently sealed under the reclamation site) being found, tumuli are located on the peninsula (all investigated). Bronze Age items found during a 1960&#8217;s construction in HMS Sultan included a hoard of axe heads and torcs (now stored by Portsmouth museum <a title="services" href="http://www.uk-business-computer-services.co.uk/">services</a>).</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">A three-celled dwelling unearthed during construction of the Rowner <a title="Estate" href="http://www.uk-house-for-sale.co.uk/">Estate</a> in the 1970s points to a settled <a title="landscape" href="http://www.uk-garden-maintenance.com/">landscape</a>. Adjacent to the River Alver which passes the southern and western edges of Rowner can be found a Norman motte and bailey, the first fortification of the peninsula, giving a high vantage point over the Solent, Stokes Bay, Lee-on-the-Solent and the Isle of Wight. The Rowner estate and HMS Sultan are situated upon the former Naval air station, first known as RAF <a href="http://www.uk-business-printing.co.uk/printer/gosport/" class="st_tag internal_tag" rel="tag" title="Posts tagged with Gosport">Gosport</a> and later as HMS Siskin and gives its name to the <a title="local" href="http://www.uk-hub.co.uk/">local</a> infant and junior schools. The barracks at Browndown (Stokes Bay) were used in the first series of Bad Lads Army.</p>

<p style="text-align: left;"><a href="http://www.uk-business-printing.co.uk/printer/cannock/" class="st_tag internal_tag" rel="tag" title="Posts tagged with Cannock">Cannock</a> lies on the M6 Toll, A34 and A5 roads, to the north of the Black Country (about 11 kilometres (6.8 mi)) and south of Stafford (about 13 kilometres (8.1 mi)). It is served by a <a title="railway" href="http://www.uk-railway-sleepers.co.uk/">railway</a> station on the Chase Line. The post town of <a href="http://www.uk-business-printing.co.uk/printer/cannock/" class="st_tag internal_tag" rel="tag" title="Posts tagged with Cannock">Cannock</a> includes Bridgtown, Heath Hayes, Hednesford, and Norton Canes. <p style="text-align: left;">Its name comes from the Celtic cnoc, meaning hill. It is first recorded in the unlikely form Chenet in the Domesday Book, probably due to the <a title="information" href="http://www.uk-hub.co.uk/">information</a> being written down by a Norman scribe with less than perfect knowledge of English.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">The town was very small until coal mining increased heavily during the mid to late nineteenth century. The area then continued to grow rapidly with many industries coming to the area because of its proximity to the Black Country and because of its coal reserves. After the Second World War the town&#8217;s population again increased and has kept on increasing ever since as many new residential developments are built as commuting areas for <a title="Birmingham" href="http://www.uk-business-printing.co.uk/birmingham/west-midlands/">Birmingham</a>, <a title="Wolverhampton" href="http://www.uk-business-printing.co.uk/wolverhampton/west-midlands/">Wolverhampton</a>, Walsall and Stafford.</p>

It has been suggested that the nearby Great Hill of Taplow was called the &#8216;Mai Dun&#8217; by the Iron Age Brythons. The area of the town <a title="centre" href="http://www.uk-call-centres.co.uk/">centre</a> was originally known as &#8216;South Ellington&#8217; and is recorded in the Domesday Book as Ellington in the hundred of Beynhurst.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">The <a href="http://www.uk-business-printing.co.uk/printer/maidenhead/" class="st_tag internal_tag" rel="tag" title="Posts tagged with Maidenhead">Maidenhead</a> urban area includes urban and suburban regions within the bounds of the town, called <a href="http://www.uk-business-printing.co.uk/printer/maidenhead/" class="st_tag internal_tag" rel="tag" title="Posts tagged with Maidenhead">Maidenhead</a> Court, North Town, Furze Platt, Pinkneys Green, Highway, Tittle Row, Boyn Hill, Fishery and Bray Wick; as well as suburbs in surrounding civil parishes: Cox Green and Altwood in Cox Green parish, Woodlands Park in White Waltham parish, and <a title="part" href="http://www.uk-part-time-jobs.co.uk/">part</a> of Bray Wick in Bray parish. Bray village itself is still just about detached.</p>
<p>Immediately surrounding <a href="http://www.uk-business-printing.co.uk/printer/maidenhead/" class="st_tag internal_tag" rel="tag" title="Posts tagged with Maidenhead">Maidenhead</a> are to the east, on the opposite side of the river, the village of Taplow. A few miles further on is <a title="Slough" href="http://www.uk-business-printing.co.uk/slough/berkshire/">Slough</a>. To the north the Cookhams (Cookham Village, Cookham Rise &amp; Cookham Dean). Also in this area is the wealthy area of Pinkneys Green. These lie south of the Berkshire-<a title="Buckinghamshire" href="http://www.uk-business-printing.co.uk/printers/buckinghamshire/">Buckinghamshire</a> border, which is formed by the River Thames (which then bends southwards to form the <a href="http://www.uk-business-printing.co.uk/printer/maidenhead/" class="st_tag internal_tag" rel="tag" title="Posts tagged with Maidenhead">Maidenhead</a>-Taplow border). To the south is the village of Holyport. Continuing by road to the South-East leads to the town of Windsor.</p>
